Robert Smithson’s 1972 essay “The Spiral Jetty” is subjected to a series of manipulations: extraction of parts, contamination with an unrelated text (a passage from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of The Rings), processing with a Markov chain text generator, and finally exposure to audience interaction through a series of controls that allow the text to be split, spun and reflected on the page.
